Interview door Jessica Santiago Lopez
Q: Thanks for taking the time to do this interview. How are you?
D: I’m amazing, thanks for the chat.
Q: ‘Her Halo’ is finally out, congrats on releasing a great record! What’s it been like to have the record out and how has it been received so far?
D: Thanks! Well the response to ‘Her Halo’ has been possibly the best response we have had to a Teramaze album ever, so it’s been really great .
Q: Some of our readers might not be familiar with the band yet, even though it is your 5th full-length record already. Could you tell a bit more about what the current Teramaze is all about?
D: We have been classed as a progressive metal band and I’m ok with that. We tend to sit on the heavier side of it, but we love the challenge of writing intricate sections as well, which is very much the progressive element. I started the band in the 90’s when I was a teenager, but after 2 albums I pursued a songwriting career in the commercial world, which was great experience. It wasn’t until around 2009-2010 that I re-ignited the name and released the first album back ‘Anhedonia’(which some people class as our first album). We worked with Jeff Waters (Annihilator) on that album and it gained some new ground for us and got us going.
Q: For those who haven’t heard the record yet, what can people expect to hear on the record, sound and theme wise?
D: It’s a cinematic sounding album with a lot of different moods, based around a concept about a trapeze artist girl who goes through the ups and downs of being an artist and becomes involved in a dark love triangle.
Q: How did the recording process for ‘Her Halo’ go? Anything you did different compared to ‘Esoteric Symbolism’?
D: This album was a lot more of a band collaboration than ‘Esoteric Symbolism’. We sent ideas back and forth through our Facebook messenger, haha, It was a lot of fun. ‘Esoteric’ was a dark and tough album personally, but I still love that album.
Q: ‘Her Halo’ seems to have more variety sound wise, compared to your previous material. Where there any specific music elements that you really wanted to include on this record?
D: Well, keyboards where a big thing on ‘Her Halo’. To really get the sound and tone we were after they had to be brought in a lot more. Other than that it was fairly similar to ‘Esoteric’, with guitars being the main instrument in the mix.
Q: What would you say has been the biggest challenge for Teramaze during the creating/recording process for this record?
D: For me personally, going through losing my father to cancer, was a really big thing. Also breaking my hand through the process made me re-think what I was playing or could play. There was a lot going on in my life that fueled these songs, it was very cathartic to just pour my heart into the music and I’m really glad I had that there to vent all my pain., and also seeing something good and positive come from it all was a bonus.
Q: Any specific songs of this new record that you’re really looking forward to play live? (and why?)
D: “Delusions of Grandeur” for sure will be a fun and challenging song live. We are rehearsing other songs now for shows like “For the Innocent” and “Out of Subconscious”, those really lend themselves to the live performance. I can’t wait to get back out there actually.
Q: About playing live, can fans expect to see you guys live in The Netherlands / Europe in the near future? Any plans?
D: Absolutely! We are in talks for touring Europe and the USA at the moment , so when we have something ready we will let everyone know. We are itching to get out on the road.
Q: So now that the record is out, what are the plans for Teramaze for 2016?
D: Hopefully to tour a lot and to start writing the next album.
Q: And my last question, do you have any message for your fans and our readers?
D: We hope to see everyone soon! If you haven’t heard ‘Her Halo’ yet, you must go check it out and come hang out on our Facebook page!
